Marty hopes Skeeter will run the business someday, but years later we find him working only as the new hotel's maintenance man. June 11 The following article appeared in ‘The News’ on Wednesday 10 June. In the weekend Westport Cos were at home to Paroa in the West Coast competition. Coronation Park was looking a treat after its recent rolling and mowing. With good support on the sidelines and an abundance of players, the home team were in good spirits to take on the old enemy, Paroa. Westport dominated the early exchanges with good team work and precise passing, especially through the midfield, but were unable to convert any of the many chances created. From a corner at about 20 minutes into the game, Grant Smith went forward, met a well-placed corner shot and gave the keeper no chance, to make the score 1-0. Paroa defended well and kept the half-time score at 1-0. In the second half, the home team lifted the pace and made wholesale changes to give all the substitutes a run. The chances, and better finishing, paid dividends and 15 minutes into the second half the score was 3-0 with two well-finished goals from Perry Bray pushing forward from midfield. Ian Martyn played a dominant role in the centre of the park and was well supported by Jacqui Christy-Cumming and German Matamala. | The defence played confidently and handled the Paroa attacks well, with Grant Smith and Greg Duncan getting through a lot of work. Paroa were always a threat on the break and were rewarded with a goal after a mix-up in the penalty area between midfield and defence to make the score 3-1. This spurred Westport on to raise their game. They put on a great exhibition of flowing, attractive football, going from one end of the field to the other and Jai Fenn managed to finish off one such move to make the score 4-1. With time running out, another impressive passing sequence was finished off by Perry Bray to complete his hat trick. This was another fine performance by Westport Cos who are improving with each game. With an improvement in finishing, the final score could easily have been into double figures. Player of the day was Jacqui who has settled well into the midfield and is beginning to benefit from the hard work of her midfield teammates. Next week Westport Cos are at home to Marist with a 2pm kickoff at Coronation Field. | June 09 Last week Patrick, Christina & Emily all took part in the schools wacky hair day which helps raise funds for the various classes to go to camps, trips & sports tournaments which is all well and good but to what lengths will children go to to look the wackiest… Well this must have been on Patrick’s mind as he was having a shower earlier in the week – as he was shampooing his hair he noticed my razor and it makes you wonder where his head was at as he decided it might be a good idea to see what the razor would do… The thing is though his loving parents didn’t notice until Thursday night after he had his drama classes. To our defence on Tuesday night he’d headed straight from the shower to bed and the next morning it was pretty cold so we assumed that was the reason why he’d put his beanie on… this was also the case when he came home from school with beanie still firmly attached that afternoon and again the next morning when he got up the beanie was still on his head. Needless to say on Thursday afternoon at drama classes he’d been told to take his beanie off and low and behold people noticed that their were a fair few tufts of hair missing… When questioned about it by mum when he got home the first excuse out of his mouth was that some of the guys at school must have done it at some stage but he wasn’t sure… where that one came from is anyone’s guess – Anyway after a bit more probing the truth finally came out that he’d done it himself in the shower. When I came home that night after being at Rotary and was made aware of the situation we quickly got the hair clippers out and he now has a stylish fat Mohawk complete with shaved sides and yes he still has his rat’s tail which is longer than his sisters hair. Hopefully it’ll grow back in time for Kenton & Talarne’s wedding… June 05 The following article appeared in ‘The News’ on Thursday 4 June following the game on 31st May… In the weekend, Westport Cos were drawn at Greymouth against Grey High School. In dry but windy conditions the game began with Cos playing into a strong wind. The quickly came to grips with the conditions and created some early chances which Jai Fenn converted with a well-aimed header from a corner. The visitors dominated the early exchanges for long periods with the midfield of Ian Martyn, Perry Bray, Jacqui Christy-Cummin and Rod Lochie taking control and providing the strikers, Blessing Ndbele and Jai Fenn, with numerous chances. Jai Fenn got on the score sheet for the second time midway through the half when he placed his shot wide of the High School keeper to make the score 2-0. Before the break, Ian Martyn slotted home a penalty to make the score 3-0 at halftime. Although Westport dominated for long periods, High School were always a danger on the break and the defence of Pat McNamara, | Mike Martyn, Grant Smith and Greg Duncan had to be alert and on top of their game. Newcomer Grant Smith had a top game in the centre of the defence with some timely tackling and tireless running. In the second half, with the conditions in their favour, Cos enjoyed long periods of dominance and increased the lead with another penalty converted by Ian Martyn, a goal from Perry Bray and two from Blessing Ndbele. High School were rewarded a goal from a spot kick which Alvaro saved on the first attempt, but he was beaten from the rebound. The final score was 7-1 to Westport Cos who dominated for long periods, played some attractive flowing football and took their chances well. Player of the day was Jai Fenn for his two goals and his hassling game up front. This weekend Westport Cos are drawn at home to Paroa with a 2pm kickoff at Coronation Field. | May 28 On Wednesday 27th May we had confirmation in ‘The News’ that Christina had made the Buller Under 13 Development squad for Netball after a good showing at the trials on Saturday 23rd. This means she will be heading to the ‘Top of the South’ tournament in Blenheim on Saturday 13th June; the ‘Nelson age group’ tournament a couple of weekends later; the ‘Buller/Westland Field Day’ tournament currently in August but this may be brought forward; and the ‘Kawatiri Cup’ in Greymouth mid August. By all accounts she has been playing really well regardless of what position she plays, which is really positive. So you go girl and make it count on the courts… May 19 This year at The Salvation Army Westport our MOSAIC Children and Youth Ministries are getting behind the 40 Hour Famine… | A number of our Junior Youth are signing up for the 40 Hour Famine, which is a youth fundraising and education event, which raises funds for children living in poverty in developing countries. | So get behind the efforts of young people in your area by sponsoring what they are doing… May 15 On Friday afternoon prior to heading off to Kids Camp it would have seemed that things were transpiring against us making it to Hanmer Springs leaving at 4:00pm... About 2 o’clock I went to get the van from the Family Store only to find that the roller door motor was not going, after checking the fuse box and the cut-off switch which were fine I was getting just a little worried – so after a quick call to the electrician explaining that we needed the fault fixed within the next couple of hours due to taking a group of 6 children to Hanmer Springs for Kids Camp they were on site within 15mins… [The fault was as simple as the overload switch in the motor switch box had popped out and needed to be reset] Then as I went to start the van – NOTHING… it was as dead as road kill… You get the point I’m sure. The sliding door on the van had been left slightly ajar and considering it hadn’t been used since the Tuesday before the battery was flat as… So after pushing the van outside and giving it a jump start we were on the road ready to go. Well almost - we still needed to ensure that all the children arrived on time and that we got on the road before the weather packed in for the weekend… May 13 As reported in ‘The News’ on Wednesday 13 May… In the weekend Westport Cos were drawn away to Reefton in the first round of the West Coast competition. In dry but brisk conditions at Reefton, the visitors took time to settle and adjust to the shorter, narrower pitch. Reefton took the early honours and were rewarded for their efforts when Dave Trowbridge scored direct from a corner kick. Early in the first half Westport lost left back Jason Partridge through injury and newcomer Gary Bowden, on debut, did a fine job filling in, playing in an unfamiliar position. Gradually the visitors got their game together and created several chances but were unable to pull back the deficit at halftime. | In the second half, the game seesawed from end to end with both teams creating chances and both guilty of being indecisive in front of the goal. Both goalkeepers were kept busy and Alvaro in the Westport goal made several vital saves to keep their hopes alive. With 15 minutes left in the game, Reefton were awarded a penalty. Goalkeeper Alvaro again came to the rescue with a great save. This kick caused Westport Cos to lift their game and they mounted attack after attack on the Reefton goal. Eventually, with about five minutes to go, a good corner kick from Ian Martyn was met by Jabu with a brilliant header into the top corner to make the score 1-1. | An all-out effort by the Cos to clinch a winner was thwarted by some aggressive, enthusiastic defence from the Reefton team to make the final score 1-1. This was a rather disjointed performance by the Westport team, who did not settle into their usual, fluid, passing game. They found the smaller field difficult to deal with. Reefton played with plenty of enthusiasm and aggression and will cause many problems when playing at home to teams in this year’s competition. Player of the day for Westport Cos was Alvaro Pena for some crucial saves to keep the team in the game and the all important penalty save. Next weekend Westport Cos have the bye. | May 11 This past weekend has just flown by so fast with so much stuff happening that it’s hard to imagine that we had any time to just sit back, relax, spend time with God and chill-out. But I believe that when you are in God’s will then the small amount of time that you do get between the business of life & ministry is vitally important to energise you for the next thing… On Friday afternoon Tribe kicked off a busy weekend with a study looking at the question ‘Would a Christian Do That?’ There was some interesting discussion around Romans 12 and what is acceptable Christian behaviour in today’s world, and even more so when it came time to summarise the passage…

| Later that afternoon 153 Kids Klub started the term off with the second half of the Jonah Veggietales Movie and an introduction into this term. During the week some of the guys from Alternative Education had helped make the Activities Hall a bit more kids friendly and had done a couple of banners that will tie in with the term… | | Then to complete the Friday night mayhem the Junior Youth Group had a games evening where they had a variety of board games, cards, puzzles etc. to do including a few rounds of Outburst which was quite entertaining… | | On Saturday afternoon Annette had her first wedding to do up in them there hills and although the weather forecast was for bad weather the morning started off fine which gave me the opportunity to catch up on some household chores… However, as the time for the wedding approached the weather turned and became bitterly cold, so much so that Annette was kitted out in her thermals… After the wedding Annette came home to thaw-out literally… And later-on that evening we had some chill-out time and rather than become engrossed by the glow of the TV screen we spent some time just being… The kids played some games, while I did some reading and Annette did some more work on her quilt. On Sunday morning we had a fun and interactive service planned to celebrate mother’s on Mother’s Day and we had a fair few new faces as we had invited all the children that are going to be going to Kids Camp next week to church so that while Kidz Zone was on they could practice there dance moves. More or less straight after the service I had to shoot off to Football, which was out in Reefton. On a small tight pitch which we never really came to grips with and where we didn’t have the rub of the ball we went 1-0 down about mid way through the first half and it looked like we were headed for our first defeat of the season. But with about 5 minutes to go Jabu pulled off a beautiful header from a well struck corner by Ian to level the game and then it was game on… We were lucky to come away with a point and it just shows that we have a lot to work on going forward. | Then by the time I made it back from the game I was finishing of preparation for our Sunday @ 7 Cafe Style Youth Service… This week rather than utilising one of the many Nooma series DVD’s I use a video clip that I saw at the Willow Creek Leadership Summit last year in Wellington which came across really well and a number of people got a lot out of the night…
| I had also allocated time a bit of time for a discussion about what it is that we do and how we can do better which provided some valuable insights for us to continue to reach out to the youth of Westport. So all in all it has been an extremely busy weekend and I’ve had a blast! And I continue to be amazed at the opportunities that are presented before me/us to talk about what it is that I/we do and how I/we can impart the message of Christ on others… To God be the glory and honour as people heed his call on their lives and step out in faith and do what he would have them do… May 07 | | On Saturday (16th May) at 6:00pm at The Salvation Army, Westport we will be showing the underwater adventure that set Walt Disney Pictures apart from the other animators in 2001...
